Welding Standards in Alberta: What Industrial Clients Need to Know

Welding is one of the most regulated trades in industrial construction, for good reason. A failed weld on a pressure vessel or structural connection can have catastrophic consequences. Here’s what clients hiring welding contractors in Alberta should understand.

Key Welding Standards in Alberta

CSA W47.1, Certification of companies for fusion welding of steel. This is the baseline certification for any company performing structural or pressure welding in Canada.

ASME Section IX, The welding and brazing qualification code for pressure vessels and piping. Required for any work touching pressure-containing systems.

AWS D1.1, Structural welding code for steel. Common in construction and fabrication of steel structures.

Tu Casa Group welders hold qualifications under the relevant codes for each type of work we perform. We maintain documented Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) for all certified processes.

What to Ask a Welding Contractor

Before awarding work, clients should ask:

  1. What codes does your company hold certification under?
  2. Can you provide current welder qualification records?
  3. Do you have a documented Quality Control plan?
  4. Who performs Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) on your welds?

If a contractor hesitates or can’t provide documentation promptly, that’s a signal worth paying attention to.

How Tu Casa Approaches Weld Quality

We treat quality at the source, not at inspection. Our welders are trained to understand the why behind each procedure, not just the steps. Pre-weld fit-up, interpass temperature control, and final visual inspection are standard, not optional.
